A historical fiction based in the 1920's. The protagonist named Eugene "Jack" Brewer is a mulatto man who had an unfortunate mishap with a white sheriff, during which a woman was killed in the crossfire. Jack fled north to Chicago and was labeled a fugitive in Mississippi. Once in Chicago, he was able to pass himself off as white, but he always had the fear of being caught. Find out what happened to my grandfather?

TJ Morris provides a glimpse into a unique piece of true Americana. She tells a tale that intertwines the historicity of the black experience in both the South and the North, with criminal intrigue, and the interesting reality of light skinned blacks who were able to pass themselves as white. It was a piece of history that I was not familiar with until reading this book. Alone, the settings and the story would make this a must read recommendation, but what makes this book special is the engrossing and deep dialog between the vibrant characters that TJ Morris so magically brings to life. You find yourself sitting in the kitchen with Jack and the other characters, listening intently to the soul-bearing thoughts they shared as they worked out the best ways to live out their lives. I highly recommend this book because it brings to life a unique piece of Black American history that is not often popularized (but it should be) and it showcases fantastic dialog and interaction among rich and entertaining characters who just happen to be real folks in history. 5 STARS!

I enjoyed reading this story I found it an easy read that kept my attention. Many black people had to leave the south under circumstances beyond their control. I am glad TJ Morris decided to share this story. I hope we can expect more books from this author.
An engrossing true story that is brought to life by T J Morris. This book takes you along on a journey of the lives of her ancestors of Carroll County Mississippi from the 1800's to modern times. Some of the stories are painful but it shows the determination and grit of her people who were determined to survive and thrive.
As I read the chapters my maternal grandmothers brothers came to life. I was transported back to stories about our ancestors that were told on front porches in the evening in Mississippi and as our families migrated miles away from the South. So much information shared in these pages. My appetite is wet for more. Thanks for preserving these stories for us and future generations. Grandma Rosie and Uncle Norman would be so proud.
Although the book was termed fiction, I couldn't help but think it was recounting a true life depiction of past events concerning the circumstances of racial relations in the time period that was covered. The characters and locations depicted and the dialogue used appeared to be historically correct. Fast paced and suspenseful but also emotionally charged in describing the condition of the characters lives who lived in a time when black lives "did not matter".
You did it... Interesting read!!!! I read this book in a couple of hours. So glad TJ brought Jack's story to life. I've always wondered what was the true story regarding Jack being accused of murder and how he got caught. Through Johnny & TJ, I now know Jack's side of the story. I'm so glad Blood Is Thicker Than Color; otherwise I wouldn't have ever met my uncle. Thanks Governor Earl Brewer; you did the honorable thing by helping Negroes (Civil Right Lawyer) during that trying time and not letting race play a part in your decision. Right is Right. You heard Jack's side and represented him fairly. May you and Jack Forever Rest In Paradise.
Wow...I enjoyed the book it really held my interest from beginning to end. I could really identify with the characters plight , and struggles in that era of time . Tj made each character personable and connected the family ties love for one another. A very good read and I have been Proud to encourage my family and friends io read this book .
Writing historical fiction is a monumental task. Sometimes, for those of us who love to read it, it can be even harder. We read these works constantly comparing what the author reveals to what we think we know of history. The character's dialogue further illuminates whether we can continue on this journey with the author or not. But the killing part is, much of what we, as Americans, have swallowed as our history is, in fact fiction.

I picked up 'Blood is Thicker Than Color', prepared to reveal each historical malfeasance in my mind, with the Imaginary, sadity red ink of a 1960's editor. But then I fell more into the story of the characters as well as a curiosity for the writer; it is hard to embrace one, without the other. And at some point I stopped comparing TJ Morris to Toni Morrison and started looking at the parallels and the ups and downs of her characters to those of my very own family and other families I know of who had to escape Mississippi long after slaves were freed.

TJ Morris' effort totally disarmed me of my premeditated criticism and gave me the gift of exploration and self-reflection. I am glad she wrote Blood is Thicker Than Color and that I took this journey with her.
