Roger and Suzanne are back in Montevideo, Uruguay after being summoned from Los Angeles by a late night phone call. One of their friends is suspected of murder and needs their skills as detectives to help clear him of the charges. Life for Roger, and especially for Suzanne, is more complicated these days as they now have an infant son, Robert. The three of them, accompanied by Robert’s nanny, Bruce, fly to Uruguay and the game is afoot. Before long we have our heroes directly in the middle of a gang war, off for a quick trip to Chile to learn all about the local crime scene, and meeting some unlikely allies in their mission. The book has lots of action, a good whodunit storyline, guest appearances from several old friends and an old enemy from The Ambivalent Corpse and The Surreal Killer, and occasional opportunities for sightseeing and eating regional specialty foods.

We got this book because we were traveling to South America and the book takes place in some of the places we planned to visit. There was some okay local color, but we found many of the characters unbelievable and the dialog stilted.Product details

The Matador Murders Roger and Suzanne South American Mystery Series Book 3 edition by Jerold Last Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Gosh, I really enjoy the books by Jerold Last. The mystery, puns (well, some are corny, but fit the story lines),insight into clues, and vivid descriptions put me directly in the middle of the action. They remind me of TV shows like, CSI, Bones, the Closer all rolled into one. This is the third book I have read and have not been bored once. In this one Richard, his wife Suzanne, and the nanny (Bruce) run across country to help clear an old friend suspected of killing his partner. If you like fast paced police procedurals you should grab ALL of his books. The only thing that would make his books better would be the ability to sit and watch them played out on the screen.
This is the fourth book involving Suzanne and Roger Bowman. This time around they are contacted by a South American friend asking them to come and help because a police officer friend of theirs was being accused of murdering his partner in the force. Along with their nanny Bruce and new baby Robert, they fly off to Montevideo to try and solve the murder. Before too long however they find themselves knee deep in drug wars and money laundering. Can they use their world renowned powers of deduction and help their friend prove his innocence?
This is the fourth Suzanne and Roger mystery I have read and once again I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although it is the fourth, very little reference is made to the previous mysteries so it works just as well as a standalone mystery. I loved the introduction of Bruce, as Roberts nanny. He adds a whole new dynamic to the mystery solving pair and it works well. I must admit I did miss the bad puns at the end of each chapter but there were enough sprinkled through the story to keep me happy. The story itself was fast paced and full of action. These mysteries just keep on getting better. Long may they continue!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The Matador Murders, written by Jerold Last, is a fun, fast paced murder mystery about the exploits of a husband and wife team working on a homicide case that implicates a good friend. The story opens with the execution style death of crooked cop Jose Gonzales. When the murder is blamed on his honest associate, Martin Gonzales, Martin sends out a cry for help to Roger Bowman and Suzanne Foster. The married team immediately heads to Paraguay, bringing their six-month-old son and a decidedly different nanny with them. When they see their investigation leads to a series of shady land grabs in Uruguay, and the implications of a vicious drug cartel behind the murder, they go undercover in order to foil the plans of a kingpin they call Mr. X.
In between the intrigue, actions scenes, and comical moments involving the baby, Roger and Suzanne's snarly banter and loving moments give the story its heart. The secondary characters are drawn well, the bad guys are deliciously evil, and the couple's labyrinthine efforts to get to the heart of the crime make for an enjoyable read.
As a bonus, Mr. Last immerses you in the culture, history, food, and drink of countries like Uruguay, Chile, and Paraguay. His attention to food and wine will especially give you the feeling of being there, listening to the protagonists talk about the case, their opinions, and suspicions.
All in all, The Matador Murders is well worth the money and the time. Be aware this is the fourth book of the series with The Surreal Killer, The Ambivalent Corpse, and The Empananda Affair all available on for purchase. I give it Four Stars and a good reason to seek out an authentic Latin American restaurant.
This is the second book I have read by American author Jerold Last and is the second book in the series about his husband and wife team, Roger, and Suzanne. Mr. Last has a natural style and tells a good tale. Like the first book, the story takes place in South America fighting a Uruguayan gang war. The story is fast paced, and because Roger and Suzanne are such well-drawn characters, you keep turning pages to see what is going to happen to them. The sign of a good book is if you empathize with the protagonists, and this series works for me.
Would make an excellent mini-series on TV. For some reason, it reminds me of the golden days of American detectives from the 60s. Jerold Last is above all a storyteller supreme. Great stuff and highly recommended.
I have really enjoyed books in this series, so I thought I'd like to learn more about the characters' experiences in South America. However, I was disappointed by the amount of violence in the plot and could not give the review a higher rating.
Roger is asked to help a policeman in Montevideo prove his innocence, but Suzanne decides that she won't let him travel without her, their new baby, and Bruce (the nanny). Roger exams the scene of the crime and quickly solve the "locked room" murder. The underlying motive for the crime involves a drug war between two factions in the city. The investigators soon find themselves in the middle of a bloody drug war.
When Roger decides to pose as a third drug lord interested in taking over the territory, the body count gets really high. I found it unsettling that the "good guys" don't hesitate to kill in order to solve the mystery. On top of that the people who grow the drugs are portrayed as gentlemen farmers who supply a product to investment bankers to sell for them. It would all sound very civilized except for the insidious nature of their product.
I felt that the crime boss committing murders could have been flushed out by using tricks and intelligence rather than adding to the violence. The only saving grace was that the killings were not graphic. My only question Do the ends justify the means? I'd prefer using little gray cells to catch the criminal.
very interesting mystery. Characters are captivating. plot keeps your interest until the end. I love this series and will read every book whick comes out.
We got this book because we were traveling to South America and the book takes place in some of the places we planned to visit. There was some okay local color, but we found many of the characters unbelievable and the dialog stilted.
